Friday 29th January saw the 25th Annual All-Ireland Credit Unions Schools Quiz get off to a roaring start with a record attendance of nearly 200 pupils for the St Jarlath’s Credit Union stage of the event. With over 30 National Schools there on the night, competition was fierce but Newtown and Corrandulla came out in pole position in the Under 11 and Under 13 categories respectively. In the under 11’s, St Colman’s NS came in second followed closely by Castlehackett NS, and in the under 13’s St Benin’s NS came in second followed by St Patrick’s NS in third.
The quiz, one of the most exciting events in the primary school calendar year, consisting of two knockout stages at local and regional level and culminating in a National Final in Dublin’s RDS April where it’s expected that 100 qualifying teams will compete under the watchful eye of RTE’s Marty Whelan as Quiz Master.
The local stage of the Quiz was run by volunteers from over 300 Credit Unions during weekend of the 29th – 31st January throughout communities all over Ireland. The questions compiled by primary school teachers covered topics such as geography, history, music, literature and sport.
